Kelly Thompson

It’s not often that an artist is asked to illustrate a portrait for a magazine cover and that that illustration be a self-portrait, but that was the brief delivered to Kelly Thompson by Paperboy Magazine. The issue release to coincide with her arrival in Auckland to host a workshop as part of the Semi Permanent conference.

After a couple of days of illustrator self-doubt and fears that she couldn’t capture herself as she does her usual subjects, Thompsons’ fears were erased as the portrait came together in a colourful likeness that Paperboy has called their most successful cover yet. The portrait accompanied an impressive 8 page spread about the artist, her life and processes.
